as cozy as spring

This is why I have a blog.

You just never know what you'll get when you stop by 'as cozy as spring'.  I sat for a good bit this morning writing my very personal feelings about the Latin Mass.  Alas, I didn't finish it so instead... 

The very worst song I really love.  I was trying to get back at Lissa for getting some horrid "Wham" song stuck in my head.  And to really help it sink in, I included a link.  And then I watched it.  This is the funniest thing I've seen all week.  The lyrics are so fantastically hilarious on their own, but the video is even better.  I have tears in my eyes. 

So this is what I chose to share right now.  If anyone would like to read my thoughts on the Latin Mass, leave a comment and I'll try to finish.  Meanwhile, sail on!

Poetry Sunday?

Alas, that's the way things go at 'as cozy as spring'.  

 As October nears, my husband and I are both in the mood for Loreena McKennitt.  My personal favorite song is "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes, sung by McKennitt.  It's gorgeous.  She does the same with "The Lady of Shalott" .  Just great music all around.  

So I'll leave you with some snippets.  I have Sunday baking to do and the Cowboys, ahem, the 3 and 0 Cowboys are playing the Redskins right now.  

New Old Music

A memory hit me this morning while driving to Mass. A friend made me a mixed tape (I'm so old) in high school featuring a number of fabulous, but obscure songs. He had great taste in music. My favorite song from the tape was by The Innocence Mission entitled, "Wonder of Birds". The internet failed me this morning as it is NOT available on ITunes, or anywhere else it seems. I was able to listen to it on Rhapsody. And oh, it's every bit as lovely as it was when I was fifteen.

They have a number of CDs out, a children's CD and a Christian CD (available at Catholic Music Network. How exciting.

And if anyone actually remembers this song or knows where I can find a copy, comment already!

Called it!

My husband and I just finished watching VH1's Top 100 songs of the '90s. NOT suitable for children, but we really enjoyed it. We bet early on what song would be the number one - he went with the vague "something by Madonna" and I was absolutely certain it would be Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". How could it be anything else? That song came out my freshman year in high school and still it sounds so wonderfully new - that's been 16 years ago, I think?

It's been a day - from the moment I clicked on my email this morning through the checking of the mail to the serving of canned Spaghetti O's for dinner - which really sums of the reality of life right now more than anything else could. My husband took the children out for a day of fun so I could clean house and wrap presents and instead I spent the entire day working on health insurance forms. I'd like to rant a little bit about that, but I won't. I'm trying to just get over it. I've had lots of practice just trying to get over it (an excellent motivation for going through natural childbirth is your insurance company saying they aren't going to pay for your epidural - those things aren't cheap). Really now. Don't get me started on health insurance.

But a couple of hours smiling with my husband both of us repeating, "I love that song." was just what I needed.

Songs that make me cringe..

You know those songs that you kind of hate, but when they come on the radio you can't change the station?  I have several:

• If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
• Say You, Say Me - Lionel Ritchie - my sister commented that she particularly dislikes the upbeat middle section.
• Somebody's Knockin - Terry Gibbs
• Summer Breeze - Seals and Crofts - cannot change it
• I Go Crazy - Paul Davis  (shhh.. I actually have this CD...)
• And the one song that inspired the list! Sail On by The Commodores.  Is there any better line in music history than, "You know it ain't so hard to say - Would you please just go away?"  Awesome.

I'm sure there are so many more I can't think of right now.  And looking at the list, maybe it's not the songs, but the late 1970s to early 1980s that make me cringe.

And the finally song that make me cringe and has pretty much turned me off of modern country music permanently, Ticks by Brad Paisley.  It's not cute or funny or clever.  It's just gross.  Checking someone's body for vermin?  That's romantic? Really?  I have NO problem changing the station on that one.  And also anything by Spandau Ballet.

Top Ten

A few years ago someone put together a list of great songs and #1 was Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.  My husband and I did not agree.  So when I'm bored in the car I try to think of my own top ten.  I am limiting this list to songs that have had some radio play because my musical taste tends to the wacky and my real top ten would probably be a whole bunch of songs no one knows.  People have looked through my CD collection and asked if I got them all in the dollar bin.  Here it is, in no particular order:

1. Come Monday - Jimmy Buffet
2. The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
3. Drops of Jupiter - Train
4. December 1963 (Oh What a Night) - The Four Seasons - try and NOT dance to that song
5. No Leaf Clover - Metallica
6. Holiday - Green Day
7. I'll Be - Edwin McCain - (reminds me of our honeymoon)
8. On the Turning Away - Pink Floyd
9. Pancho and Lefty - Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard - I can't stop laughing right now because I am totally serious.
10. The End of the Innocence - Don Henley

Say what you want, I can take it.
