I've wanted a loom for years but it seemed impractical and indulgent. I have my hands full caring for my family and homeschooling. I don't have time for more fiber arts. But as we read Farmer Boy through the autumn, my resistance faltered and I was stalking ebay daily.
My husband gave me to go ahead to find my own Christmas present. I chose an Ashford Rigid Heddle in the 28 inch width. My husband, son, and I finished and assembled it and placed it under the tree. I waited anxiously for the 25th, like I haven't done since I was about 8 years old.
I love it. A simple instructional youtube clip had me weaving on the 26th. It's very intuitive. I think it will take some time to sort out which yarn weights fit which reeds, much as gauge works in knitting. For now, I'm relying heavily on Ravelry and what has worked well for others. I have successfully woven two scarves. One was claimed by my daughter and another is on its way to a lovely friend who has been not only very kind and generous, but a tremendous inspiration to me.
I'm holding off a bit on anything too crazy but in my head, there are rugs and kitchen towels and plaid. So much plaid.
