I've almost completely lost the ability to write here lately. It takes a good deal of concentration for me to write and it is rarely that quiet. I'm also tired. The baby is not a good sleeper even still, and I'm sleeping less than when she was a newborn. I do enjoy a good book post, both reading and writing so I'm going to try to cobble this together.
Me: I am reading The House at Tyneford. I'm not yet half done so there's still plenty of time for things to deteriorate, but so far I love it. Like, can't wait for bedtime and stay up too late reading kind of love it. It's beautifully written and engaging, particularly remarkable as I have little to nothing in common with the characters.
Next up on my list is Wormwood Forest: A Natural History of Chernobyl. This is right up my alley and I wish I'd found it sooner. I recently stumbled upon a documentary about the wildlife in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and found it fascinating. The flora and fauna, in some cases, are thriving despite the high levels of radiation still found there.
I'm still reading The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate to my daughter. We're almost finished. The length of time it has taken us to read this is unrelated to how much we enjoy it. I think it will make the top ten, but there are a few things I hope she wraps up a little. Specifically (possible spoiler alert?), Calpurnia desires to be a scientist but is expected to be a homemaker and (so far) I'm frustrated with the author's (or Calupurnia's) disinclination to merge the two worlds. At any rate, highly, highly recommended.
Two new picture books hit just at the right time. The Tomten and The Tomten and the Fox which are wintry and quiet and poetic. So in love with these books. My son is still floating between pictures books and chapter books and he indulges me by letting me read these to him daily.
The Big Red Barn wins favorite new board book. We have loads of Sandra Boynton but this is far more peaceful and pleasant to read. The baby loves being read to and desperately shove a book at me, smile as I take it, and then back into my lap.
So those are the highlights for right now! We're supposed to start back to school on Monday so I have to (whimper) make sure lesson plans are in order. Happy Friday, friends!
