Garter Stitch Cardigan by Erika Knight from Simple Knits for Cherished Babies
Knit in Sublime Organic Cotton (tragically discontinued) on US 4 and 5
No modifications. (I don't think.... Ah, how quickly I forget.)
This was a good first project for the baby. While it is a nice design, I didn't love the pattern or the yarn, but I got a feel for the sizing and construction of baby garments and thought a lot about what I would change. I'm glad I didn't jump right in with my favorite patterns because I'm already planning alterations.
Nothing matched this yarn but my son chose these green buttons that's about as good as anything I could find. I think that this cardigan is simple enough to get a lot of use.
So knitting friends, what is your favorite yarn for baby knits? I see Debbie Bliss Cashmerino used a lot but I've never tried it myself.
And also! Does anyone use/like Handmade Beginnings or any other baby sewing book? I plan to dust off the sewing machine next week.
I'm sorry, I am much too new to knitting to have any baby knitting answers to those queries, but: that's the sweetest little cardigan! I like the shiny green buttons :-)

Hi Jennifer, this is in reply to what you wrote at my weblog ... :-) If you would like to, you may ask your son what he would like me to photograph, and I'll take a picture just for him and send it on. (You don't have to, of course; I won't be offended.)

I only made that one little cardigan for Jake, but I absolutely LOVE the yarn...it was Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton. I guess people don't use cotton that much because it doesn't hold up in the wash that well, but it is so soft and perfect for babies, in my opinion.

I shall take a flower photo for him :-) It should be relatively easy, since it is summer here ...

That is so sweet and lovely. I know I'll never get beyond scarves and socks, but I like to come here and dream.
Can't wait to see it on the baby. :)

I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to knit a baby sweater for my dear little godson who is due any day now! I just couldn't find something special enough to make for him that I didn't think he'd already have made by someone else...he comes from a very crafty family.;) But your cardigan is so cute, I thought I should try. It's turning out so cute. Thanks!

Lovely little cardi!
My mum knitted a few little wee cardigans for Harrison. The one I loved best was sadly gathered up (by me!) with some other washing and put through a hot wash cycle. It is now big enough for a little dolly. I cried when I did that. Must ask Mum to do another one for him for next winter!
I find when I am out with Harrison if he's in something hand knitted on, or has a hand knitted blanket with him (he has a rather amazing one my Aunty made him) we ALWAYS get stopped for a chat to tell me how lovely the cardi/blanket/whatever is, usually by older ladies who understand the effort involved in making these items. Secretly, I really love it when these ladies stop me.
