I actually completed a pair this year. Last year October was too busy. This year was even busier, but it was busy with time to kill, if you know what I mean. Busy with baseball practices and games and ballet and World Series dates with my husband - all prime knitting time.
There's a hilarious passage in All Would Up: The Yarn Harlot Writes for a Spin which details all the comments one receives while knitting (especially socks). I've heard so many of these. The most annoying is that knitting is slow and therefore, a poor use of time. But there are so many hours we spend just waiting for something to happen (doctor's office being a prime example). Knitting transforms all of those frustrating hours into pleasant and productive time.
These socks were wrapped up last night during my son's baseball game and they aren't great. Mostly plain with just a little band of color work at the top and a contrasting toe. The colors do not differ enough to make the color work pop and so it's a little bit blah. But! The names of the colors are Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice, so I just had to pair them for Socktoberfest.
Other details: Sunshine Yarns Merino Sport knit on Knit Picks US 2.5 dpns. The fair isle chart was found in either Traditional Fair Isle Knitting or Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting (I think the first one). No real pattern, just percentages with a CO of 48. I haven't actually read this article yet, but I think it details sock math nicely.
I have a little sock kit I keep in my knitting bag. It was a little plastic zip pouch I got from the dentist. In it, I keep darning needles, crochet hooks, stitch markers, a measuring tape and my favorite sock needles (the above mentioned Knit Picks Harmony DPNs - super sharp and smooth) and a pair of nail clippers that sub as scissors.
I like them! Colourwork doesn't have to pop, and they are perfect for October.

You had me at Pumpkin Juice and Butterbeer…and socks….and October…Okay. So you had me with all of the above! lol. :) I love them, Jenn! I need to wrap up my shawl if I'm going to meet my personal goal of knitting my first pair of socks before Christmas. I tried once already, but my little guy pulled out my needles and some of my work. Good thing he's cute. ;) I'm going to check out that article on sock math. Thanks for the link.
