It so happens that I am reading all of the same books with the children as I was last week. I'm still exploring my Kindle - why did you guys not tell me I could look words up in the dictionary as I read - without even leaving the page? I just figured that out last night. That could change the world. Or something. I really am a happier person when I'm unplugged, but in this case 1) The Kindle does not feel plugged in and 2) The pros far outweigh the cons (because there aren't any cons). I would not hesitate to put this down on the Christmas gift list.
The only book I really have on my mind right now is the new Knitter's Book of Socks. I think this proves that I'm a big geek because I could not be more excited. It's arriving in the mail today. There are few hardcover books I'll pre-order, but Clara Parkes has written some really brilliant books. The Knitter's Book of Wool is probably my favorite as it explores all the microscopic characteristics of different types of wool (that confirms it, huge, huge geek). The Knitter's Book of Yarn is also a wonderful resource focusing on several types of fibers and other important issues like ply. These books are the most informative and most frequently referenced knitting books I own. I hope this latest book will really help me knit longer lasting socks and ultimately, spin my own really fantastic sock yarn.
I'm pretty sure I also pre-ordered the Yarn Harlot's newest book too, but I can't remember the release date and I haven't received any shipping notice. Wouldn't that make for a wonderful weekend?
I can't leave without mentioning a children's book or two.
I saw my 11 yo daughter rereading Ballet Shoes. I keep forgetting to give her Theater Shoes, which is the only one we've yet to read. I also saw her reading ...If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. No idea why - except that I think they watched the Mayflower episode of This is America, Charlie Brown. She's also been rereading all the early Betsy-Tacy books. I haven't let her read the last four(?) because they are more mature, am I right? I got the whole set a few years ago at the second hand book shop, but I need to pre-read those last few. Oooh, I am excited about the new American Girl sets. I haven't looked into them much but I'm sure she will devour them - another possible Christmas gift there.
My 7yo son is reading the Little Bear early readers. He asks how many pages are in each story then smiles and says to me, "I can do it.". Love that! It's nice to venture out from the Faith and Freedom readers... a bit. I do love the Faith and Freedom readers. To him, I've been reading the Almanzo picture books which I'd link to but my internet connection is becoming grumpy and I need to just post before I lose this again.
The only depressing thing about writing these Friday Morning Book Posts is seeing how many of our favorites are out of print and unavailable. Boo. I wonder if e-readers will drastically change how books go in and out of print.
On that note, happy weekend, friends!
