My daughter is nine today. She asked for three things, chief among them: "Mommy, please don't cry on my birthday." Is this hilarious or really, really sad? I can't decide. I do know I've been scolded several times this morning for even looking wistfully at my baby girl. A new year begins for us all today as we start to look forward instead of back.

Happy Birthday to your dear girl. I hope you don't cry but I think its natural if you do coz we are moms and our hearts turn to mush when our little ones are beside us and gaze up at us, with their big, wide eyes and melting smile. I understand just how you feel.
